FAQs about hotels in Newcastle upon Tyne

The Spirit of the North

A former Industrial Revolution hub, Newcastle has reinvented itself into a vibrant, forward-thinking city. Although no longer brewed here, Newcastle Brown Ale, or Newkie Brown, is synonymous with the city, so it’s no surprise that the nightlife is fantastic.

From the O2 Academy to the Sage Music Centre, the Newcastle music venues are among the best in England. The city also has a thriving arts scene, including The Biscuit Factory – Britain’s largest original art store.

Equally as good is the Newcastle shopping. The Central Arcade is in an attractive Victorian building, and across the River Tyne in Gateshead is the Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping and leisure complex. Indeed, these 2 cities have a healthy rivalry that plays out in sport, architecture and, sometimes, the bizarre.

Gateshead boasts the Angel of The North, a huge statue that is already its most recognised (and controversial) symbol. While in Newcastle the Vampire Rabbit sits above a door near St Nicholas’ Cathedral. Newcastle United Football Club has the most prestigious record, but Gateshead Stadium has seen many a star compete at its international athletics meets.

To the west of the city are some remains of Hadrian’s Wall and further north is Newcastle Airport. See Booking.com for a range of accommodation all over this happening city.

I would have liked to have seen more, understood what is to see and do. No info on Newcastle in Hotel, and did not see any available in the city. A map of where we were when we got off the bus and were to get back on. Google may show were you are but only gives you details of a few streets at a time! Need the bigger picture, a tourist map.

Fantastic city with great variety of shopping, entertainment, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Stayed in Grey St so very central, everything within walking distance. Easy to use bus service, metro, plenty of taxis for getting about. People very friendly. We went to the Utilita arena to see EC and had no trouble getting a taxi there and back.

This hotel was ideal for flight stopovers…it is 5 min walk max, just across the car park from the airport doors…it was clean, friendly, very reasonably priced…and the bar food served till 10pm was grand, we had scampi and chips and salad and it was very nice. There was a restaurant but we only went in the bar…seating in the bar was comfy and atmosphere relaxed. Absolutely recommend for flight in and out of Newcastle, or indeed a visit to the city as you are straight onto the metro into the city centre (about 20 mins or so journey) …

The location is excellent. Very close to the City Centre, great restaurants, bars, shopping. We checked in on Tuesday 21st November at 3pm. The young lady who checked us in was the epitome of welcoming. very friendly, really warm and welcoming and made it clear that if there was anything she could do to help we only needed to ask. She is a real credit to the Hotel, and indeed Newcastle. These first impressions really last. The room was really what we needed, really comfy bed, great bathroom etc. Really quiet during the night.

A good alternative to a Premier Inn-style of hotel. I needed somewhere close to Newcastle Centre but with a private car park, as the trains were on strike. The bus link was from a stop right outside the hotel, and just a five-minute ride right to the City Centre, with a ten-minute frequency until mid-evening, then still a less-frequent service until late. So this hotel was ideal for my needs.

My 3rd stay at the Cairn in the last year.As it was a Sunday hotel wasn't too busy and it was a relaxing overnight stay after celebrating Newcastle United win v Wolves. Location is great with plenty of bars and restaurants in the area and car parking on site. The metro station is only a 5 minute walk and if a pleasant day it is only a 15/20 minute walk to city centre.

The Royal Station Hotel looks like it was once an impressive and luxurious place to stay. It’s in an imposing and palatial Victorian building in the heart of Newcastle and the main entrance looks very prestigious, if slightly faded, with its large chandeliers and grand staircase.
